It is often difficult for parents to know when joint pain in their children and teenagers is something serious or just ‘growing pains.’ Quite often particularly active children (runners, soccer players especially) can complain of what seems like joint pain. This is mostly because the cross country and soccer seasons which are outside extend into some pretty cold months which only exacerbates joint tension. By and large take note if the joint pain is caused by activity or strain. Take a few days off and see if it improves. If your child is feeling sharp or shooting pain he or she should immediately break from activity and see a doctor. While there are many causes for joint pain (weather, activity, disease, nutrition, genetics), the only way to identify these things specifically is at the doctor’s office.
