For many suffering from joint pain, the last thing that they want to do is exercise. The thought itself sounds painful. When your body is in so much pain at rest, it’s hard to imagine that it can endure hard work. The problem is, however, that suffering from joint pain / arthritis can be greatly improved by exercising. Not random exercising to achieve specific relief, but rather consistent exercise. Most people erroneously believe that this needs to include running miles or an excruciating workout. The reality is that engaging in ‘gentle’ workouts and gentle stretching can dramatically improve joint pain. So give exercise another look to achieve relief.

It is often difficult for parents to know when joint pain in their children and teenagers is something serious or just ‘growing pains.’ Quite often particularly active children (runners, soccer players especially) can complain of what seems like joint pain. This is mostly because the cross country and soccer seasons which are outside extend into some pretty cold months which only exacerbates joint tension. By and large take note if the joint pain is caused by activity or strain. Take a few days off and see if it improves. If your child is feeling sharp or shooting pain he or she should immediately break from activity and see a doctor. While there are many causes for joint pain (weather, activity, disease, nutrition, genetics), the only way to identify these things specifically is at the doctor’s office.

Many sufferers from joint pain find relief in yoga. Especially for those with joint pain in the lower back, the Sacroiliac join, yoga can help treat the more painful symptoms of joint pain. For those of you already into yoga, you’ll want to do twists and asymmetrical forward bends to help. If you haven’t picked up yoga yet, it may be worth going and getting a private lesson or even taking part of a larger class. Be sure to get information on those two exercises, though, as they seem to be the most effective for treating pain the SI joint. There are, of course, all of the other physical and mental benefits of yoga.

If you are part of the 1 in 6 Americans suffering from joint pain due to arthritis, you may want to consider a moderate exercise routine. We’re not talking running 5 miles here, but a nice 30-minute, 5 days per week routine. Many people suffering from joint pain do not feel that they are in a ‘condition’ well enough to exercise. There is a real fear that exercise will only exerbate existing joint pain or cause new joint pain. These are dangerous assumptions, though, because the reality is that a moderate exercise plan can actually reduce joint pain over time.

Tendonitis is also an inflammation of the joint causing pain. This is often a result of overuse or aging. This can also have to do with the pronation of one’s feet during running when thinking about Achilles tendonitis. Other than the heel we see tendonitis most in the shoulder, wrist, and elbow.
Finally, autoimmune diseases like lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis can cause joint pain. In the case of RA joint pain is just one of the many symptoms. For both of these, the body has trouble fighting off foreign substances and can often attack itself.

Let’s take a look at three common joint pain causes.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is what you usually hear about when discussing joint pain. It is the most common cause of joint pain. Most people attribute OA to aging, but pintpoint the exact cause is not yet possible.

Exertion and overuse
Sprains and strains often cause joint pain for most Americans under 50. These usually occur when ligaments are stretched too far, or at times, tears. This is often an unnatural movement that leads to significant joint pain.

Acute Injuries, Fractures
When intense pressure is placed on the bone it can split. This is a fracture.
If more pressure is put on a bone than it can stand, it will split or break. A break of any size is called a fracture. Fractures, obviously, can cause joint pain.
